What is Demurrage?
Demurrage is the daily fee the port or carrier charges when your container is not collected or returned within the agreed free days β typically a handful, then the meter runs. It is the most common surprise cost in importing, and it is almost always caused by paperwork: a missing certificate, a customs query, or a Bill of Lading still in the courier. Have every document checked before the vessel berths, and confirm free days in writing when you book.
